Population mobility

Estimating Czech people schedules requires knowing what activties they are doing, where are they doing them and when.

To be able to reconstruct reality refelcting mobility patters four types of datasets have been identified so far which come into consideration. The first two are currently available or will be made available.

First one being Cesko v pohybu is a survey of 20k individuals where 50k trips were collected. Gathered some of the relevant info, most importantly mode of travel is included. The numbers could be representative for whole czechia, but when we want to estimate the mobility on smaller areas of interest we will run into not enough samples.

Second dataset is 2021 census. Where whole population was surveyed about what locations to they go to work/school. How frequently and what modes of mobility they use. Although less detailed it gives us an nationwide data on the populations mobility (but less detailed in terms of activities - only work and school is included, temporal information, leisure such as weekend trips where the behaviour is different and distances might a lot higher).

Third type of dataset, albeit less available and monetized, is the data from mobile network operators. Where they are able to track the whole populations mobility (>90% own a mobile phone) by tracking to what BTS is their users phone connected to. This offers them ability to track the whole population (combined, each of the major operator has roughly 1/3 of the market) almost in realtime and thus provide the most detailed data on the populations mobility. With the downside being that information is harder to obtain free of charge for academic purposes, and the derived products done by public offices, which while doing the aggregates might drop some, to us relevant, information.

Fourth being the sensoric data from vehicles (especially EV), where the whole trip chain of the vehicle is available including the vehicles state of charge(SoC) and charging information.
